I've been using Supermemo for the past three years and it has greatly aided me in being able to speak and read Japanese fluently (I'm learning Chinese right now). Certainly software such as Supermemo or Smart.fm are very useful for retaining information. I now put everything I want to learn into Supermemo (Not only language stuff). At present I have about 33,000 flashcards in my database thing and I plan to keep adding more for the foreseeable future.
