The Brain Pickings 500
What three years of blood, sweat and smiles have to do with sustainable fashion.
By Maria Popova
Today is a very, very special day for Brain Pickings — it’s our 500th-post anniversary. For nearly three years, we’ve been sifting through the world’s eclectic interestingness and bringing you the very best.
To commemorate the occasion, we’ve enlisted the help of Brain Pickings contributor Len Kendall of the wonderful the3six5 Project. Among Len’s hidden talents is the gift of sketch-illustration, so he has kindly offered to illustrate our 50 most popular articles of the past 500. The resulting artwork is available under a CreativeCommons attribution non-commercial license for you to do with as you please, and the image is fully clickable so you can explore each of the 50 articles illustrated.
Now, here’s the exciting part: We’ve partnered with the good folks at Holstee, who make fabulous upcycled silk-screened shirts and other sustainable wearables, to produce an ultra-limited-edition line of Brain Pickings upcycled tees, screen-printed with the anniversary artwork by one of New York’s finest silk screeners.
We’re only producing 50 shirts, available on a first-come-first-served basis, and selling them for $50 each as a fundraising effort to help save our email newsletter, which recently lost its main sponsor. (Besides the shirt, you get a Holstee hangtag, a glee gum pack and some sweet stickers.) Think of it as a donation that just so happens to pay you back with original artwork and sustainable fashion to show your Brain Pickings pride. So grab yours today.
And, finally, it is your readership and all the wonderful feedback we’ve gotten over the years that have made the crazy amount of work — more than 200 hours a month, every month, for 33 months and counting — worthwhile. So thank you.
